There are three main phases of hand-to-hand combat; that which takes place standing up, that which takes place on the ground, and the transition from stand-up to ground fighting - this includes mostly clinch work and take downs, the first of which is incorporated in the stand-up arts and the latter of which is included in the grappling arts.
